In the animation ParaNorman, Norman, a male child who is able to see ghosts, is walking down the street and greeting the ghosts he encounters. One of them is a female airplane pilot stuck in a tree with her parachute. He to her:

It's generally non taken literally just as "goodbye" isn't taken as "God be with you" and someone "How are you lot?" doesn't really await an accurate, detailed report on your health. That's why she answers "It's a nice day." instead of "A little to the left."

Oh, yep, it'southward "it". The point is in "How are you?" and "cheerio" in that location is not a taboo implication. But if "How'due south information technology hanging?" originally implies that, then every time, as you're suggesting, someone tells that to her, information technology's a reminder of that thing
